Back after 2 years :D

Internship starting on the 14th November

To be completely honest the idea of writing a small blog was first mentioned on day 1…however I have been caught up on projects, designs and deadlines so I have only just got round to starting it (and it is now the last day of November!)

Some projects I have been involved in so far are:

  • Direct Line inserts and website images
  • Sourcing images, themes and colour schemes for the next issue of Spark
  • Designs for the tote bag that will be sent out to all existing customers
  • Designing the invite for the Geronimo Christmas Party 2011
  • Finding images for the ‘About’ page on the new Website
  • Designing a Vinyl for the empty right wall and mocking up a previous idea for the far wall
  • Learning how to use Cinema 4D

So now you can see why I have only just got round to writing it up!

Direct Line

For the Direct Line pieces it was simply a case of making sure the text and images where laid out in the best, most readable way possible. These live briefs give me an opportunity to work to specific, strict outlines. The branding has already been created, so I was referring back to their stylebook and making sure that any new pieces for Direct Line matched up to this style.

Spark

The new edition of Spark is soon to be sent out, and with the focus decided I needed to find images that would represent this topic. I looked into past editions of Spark so that I would keep to their desired style, then set about finding images that would work on each page. Here are a few of my favorite ones:

The bee image represents the concept of 'Community' and the cows nose is for a page on 'Guinness'.

I regards to working further on Spark, I would absolutely love to see it through to print. However I am waiting for the text to be finalized so can not carry on putting it together until this has been decided.

I came up with a few ideas for the packaging when I thought that the title would be ‘Online Oxygen’, but it has since been changed so I will have to get thinking again!

The idea was that the tactile packaging would engage all senses and quickly get over the title to

the reader. The air-tight packaging would have to be burst open to for the reader to find out what was inside.

I came up with a design for the tote bag but another design was decided on. I can see now that it may have been too fashion orientated and not quite bold enough for the purpose.

Christmas Invite

Even though I am only here for a few weeks I have been fortunate enough to be invited to the Geronimo Christmas party! There will be lots of turkey, pigs in blankets, Christmas cake, lots and lots of alcohol, and lots and lots and lots of festivity!!I say this not because I am a crazy, Christmas-obsessed individual, but because the theme for this years party is ‘Christmas Number 1s’. So I am expecting it to be a night of over excited spice girls, drunken Mr Blobbys and Michael Jacksons waiting longingly underneath the mistletoe. So for this reason I decided that a collage would be best to represent this and to be sent out as an invite. Under a tight deadline I enlisted the help of Jamie to put it together.

Geronimo Website

Underneath the text on the ‘About us’ page will be a slideshow of images. These images needed to show how the world has changed and to show this in one single, powerful shot. It was whittled down to 6 images, but I think my favorite image for this purpose is this:

Another project I was given was to help with the ‘Spark’ page. I had to compile, resize and put together screen-grabs that would give the reader an example of what goes in to each edition.

Vinyl

One exciting project that I was asked to help with was in finding something that would fill the right side of the office. The left side has been beautifully designed, with themed idea rooms and a fully functioning and filled sweet shop…so the white right hand side looks even more naked in comparison. As hardworking as the Geronimo team are…they do like to muck around and act like big kids as soon as the work is done. This was the main inspiration for the wall design. A mock up is shown below, along with a few of my practice illustrations.

As the small far wall is also slightly nude, Wayne filled me in on one of his ideas for filling it, and I mocked up what it would look like, to see whether he wanted to take this idea further.

Cinema 4D

As the world is moving along at a scarily fast pace, I have realized that I have some catching up to do. Luckily Tom is far more technology cool than me, so has agreed to give a few others and me some Cinema 4D tutorials. I had my first one last week and have the next one today. But I have been set some homework to do before the next tutorial, and as I thought that Friday was going to be my last day, I have not yet completed it. So I will stop blogging now and get busy attempting to make some type slightly 4 dimensional…
